Gestational diabetes symptoms and treatment
During pregnancy complications can occur one of these being Gestational Diabetes.Gestational diabetes occurs only during pregnancy. It affects the way the body uses blood glucose thus making it too high. Left untreated it can cause more complications for both the mother and the fetus.
Symptoms of gestational diabetes include:
- dehydration
- unusually frequent urination
- fatigue
Some women are more prone to develop this condition. The following are factors that can increase your risk of developing gestational diabetes during pregnancy:
- Women older than age 25 are at a higher risk
- Family or personal history:If you have previously had gestational diabetes in another pregnancy or a family member has type 1 or 2 diabetes you are at a higher risk
- Weight : if you are overweight even before pregnancy to have a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes as well.
Some women develop gestational diabetes even without any risk factors against them.
Proper treatment :
- Monitor your blood sugar. Also focus on proper diet and exercise
- Diet and nutrition: eat more fruit, vegetables and whole grains. eat foods high in nutrition and low in fat and calories, fewer animal products and sugars. A high fiber low fat diet is most important
- physical activity:. Exercise also reduces blood sugar by increasing your sensitivity to insulin.Regular exercise during pregnancy has many other benefits which include: preventing some discomforts of pregnancy such as back pain,cramps, swelling,bloating constipation ,and trouble sleeping
- exercise can also help you prepare for labor and delivery
Gestational diabetes can cause more problems for a mother and the fetus but with proper management and treatment , diet and exercise you can reduce the risk of contracting gestational diabetes and its complications.
